Project Overview

This Minden Heights project in Gelugor, Penang was undertaken as a comprehensive full-house interior design and build project, involving both building works and extensive interior renovation.

Lambert Design & Build's scope extended from building extension works, floor re-tiling and roof awning works to electrical wiring, air-conditioning, plaster ceilings, painting, aluminium and glass works, lighting selection and extensive customised cabinetry throughout the home.

The built-in furniture package included dry and wet kitchen cabinets, an altar cabinet, wardrobes for all bedrooms, dressing tables, study work desks, a TV cabinet and vanity cabinets for all shower rooms.

Custom solid plywood HPL wall panelling, HPL ceiling panelling and integrated COB LED lighting were also incorporated into selected areas to create a more cohesive relationship between the architecture, cabinetry and interior detailing.

Rather than treating construction, renovation and carpentry as separate stages, the project was approached as one coordinated residential environment.

Building Extension & Renovation Works

One of the defining aspects of the Minden Heights project was the inclusion of building extension works.

Extending an existing landed home changes more than its physical footprint. The new and existing areas need to function and feel like parts of the same residence.

A kitchen is experienced through its hardware and internal functionality just as much as through its external appearance.

Selected cabinetry at Minden Heights incorporates:

Rather than applying exactly the same configuration everywhere, made-to-measure cabinetry allows the internal arrangement to respond more closely to how each space will be used.

Dressing Tables & Study Work Desks

The carpentry scope extended beyond conventional storage.

Custom dressing tables and study work desks were incorporated into the interior, allowing these daily functions to become integrated parts of the rooms rather than relying entirely on freestanding furniture.

Made-to-measure furniture also provides greater control over dimensions and the relationship between the furniture, surrounding cabinetry and available circulation space.

Custom Altar Cabinet

A custom-made altar cabinet formed part of the home's built-in furniture package.

Incorporating an altar into the overall interior design allows an important household feature to have its own dedicated space while maintaining a visual relationship with the surrounding home.

The altar cabinetry was therefore considered as part of the overall carpentry and interior-design language rather than as an unrelated furniture piece.

TV Cabinet & Living Area Carpentry

A custom TV cabinet was designed as part of the living-area carpentry.

The television often becomes a natural focal point within a living space, so its surrounding cabinetry needs to balance visual presentation with practical storage.

Customisation allows the TV feature to respond to the actual proportions of the room while coordinating with the wall treatments and surrounding interior finishes.

Vanity Cabinets for All Shower Rooms

Custom vanity cabinets were provided for all shower rooms.

By including vanity cabinetry within the full-house carpentry package, the bathrooms could follow the wider design direction of the residence while still responding to their individual functional requirements.

The vanity locations were considered together with the surrounding shower-room requirements as part of the overall design-and-build process.

Solid Plywood HPL Wall Panelling

One of the project's distinctive interior features is the use of solid plywood with HPL finishes for selected wall panelling.

Rather than relying entirely on painted walls, custom wall treatments introduce additional depth, texture and architectural character.

The wall panels were coordinated with the surrounding built-in furniture, helping cabinetry and wall surfaces read as parts of the same interior composition.

HPL Ceiling Panel Feature

The customised detailing also extends upward through HPL ceiling panelling in selected areas.

Introducing a feature finish at ceiling level adds another architectural layer to the interior and allows the design language to extend beyond conventional cabinetry and wall treatments.

Coordinating the ceiling feature with the surrounding wall panels, carpentry and lighting creates a more intentional and immersive interior environment.

Integrated COB LED Cabinet Lighting

COB LED lighting was integrated into selected cabinetry as part of the interior design.

Concealed lighting allows illumination to become part of the furniture itself rather than relying exclusively on conventional ceiling fixtures.

Depending on its location, integrated lighting can provide additional illumination while highlighting shelving, cabinet lines, wall panels and other interior details.

The result is a cleaner lighting effect that contributes to both function and ambience.

Lighting Selection

Project Challenge

The main challenge of the Minden Heights project was its scale and level of coordination.

Unlike an interior project focused only on cabinetry or finishes, this residence involved building extension works alongside a complete interior transformation.

Structural extension, flooring, electrical wiring, air-conditioning, ceiling works, awning, aluminium and glass, painting, lighting and extensive custom carpentry all needed to progress in the appropriate sequence.

The large amount of customised furniture introduced another layer of complexity.

Dry and wet kitchens, wardrobes for every bedroom, dressing tables, study desks, altar cabinetry, TV cabinetry and shower-room vanities all serve different purposes, while the wall and ceiling panelling needed to visually connect these different areas.

The challenge was therefore to ensure that construction, technical services and interior design came together as one home.

Our Solution

Lambert Design & Build approached Minden Heights as an integrated design-and-build project from the architectural works through to the interior detailing.

The building extension and renovation works established the required spaces and technical infrastructure.

Interior elements were then coordinated around how each area would function.

Custom cabinetry was developed using E0 melamine panels and solid plywood with E-Porch HPL laminates, according to the requirements of the respective applications.

DTC soft-closing hinges, BLUM soft-closing drawer systems, BLUM AVENTOS and selected functional accessories were incorporated into suitable cabinetry to support everyday usability.

Custom wall and ceiling panelling helped connect the furniture with the surrounding architecture, while integrated COB LED lighting and selected lamps added functional and ambient lighting layers.

By considering these components together, the project could maintain a more consistent relationship between architecture, renovation, cabinetry, materials and lighting.
