Project Overview

ButterBeans Cafe at I-Avenue, Bayan Lepas, Penang was transformed from a completely empty commercial space into a warm, contemporary café environment within just 30 days.

The project called for more than an attractive café interior. The space needed to support day-to-day F&B operations while creating a comfortable atmosphere where customers could dine, enjoy coffee and spend time.

Lambert Design & Build developed a Modern Cozy interior concept, combining dark contemporary finishes with warm wood tones, ambient lighting, greenery and comfortable seating. The resulting environment balances a distinctive café identity with practical commercial functionality.

The Design Concept — Modern Cozy

The ButterBeans Cafe interior is built around a Modern Cozy concept: contemporary enough to establish a strong commercial identity, yet warm and inviting enough for customers to feel comfortable staying longer.

A dark green and charcoal-toned backdrop establishes depth and character throughout the café. This is softened by extensive warm wood finishes, timber-look flooring, upholstered seating and warm illumination.

Rather than treating greenery as simple decoration, botanical elements are incorporated as visual focal points. The illuminated plant feature, indoor greenery and botanical details introduce a refreshing contrast against the darker interior palette.

The overall effect is a café that feels contemporary and distinctive without becoming cold or overly industrial.

Café Counter & Operational Zone

The service counter forms one of the main focal points of the interior.

Custom counter cabinetry and carpentry create a clearly defined ordering and preparation zone, while the darker counter finish contrasts against warmer timber elements. The layout accommodates the café's equipment, display and service functions while maintaining a clean customer-facing appearance.

Warm lighting around the preparation and menu areas also helps visually separate the operational zone from the surrounding dark finishes.

Warm Timber & Architectural Detailing

Wood is one of the project's strongest visual elements.

Timber-look surfaces appear across the flooring, wall treatments, counter details and architectural features, creating continuity throughout the café. Vertical timber detailing also introduces rhythm and draws the eye through the space.

One of the most distinctive treatments is the timber ceiling feature with integrated linear lighting. It creates a stronger sense of arrival and gives the interior additional architectural character while reinforcing the warm atmosphere.

Lighting Design

Lighting plays an important role in creating the Modern Cozy character.

The project incorporates LED COB lighting, focused ceiling lights, decorative lighting and integrated linear illumination to create different layers of light rather than relying on uniform general lighting.

Warm accent illumination highlights seating areas, wall features, the counter and architectural details, helping create a more intimate café atmosphere.

Seating & Customer Experience

The seating layout combines different arrangements to accommodate different customer behaviours.

Individual tables provide flexibility for smaller groups, while upholstered bench seating creates a more relaxed dining environment. A softer lounge-style zone adds another level of comfort and helps prevent the café from feeling like a purely transactional F&B space.

The combination supports the intended experience: order, dine, meet, work or simply enjoy a coffee in a comfortable setting.

Artistic Feature Walls & Greenery

Feature treatments give ButterBeans Cafe its individual identity.

The dark artistic wall treatment creates an informal café character, while botanical installations introduce natural colour and texture. The illuminated greenery feature becomes an especially strong visual focal point within the dining area.

These elements provide visual interest without overwhelming the overall Modern Cozy direction.

Toilet Refurbishment

The café's design language continues into the washroom areas rather than treating them as purely functional spaces.

Dark green feature tiles, white wall tiles, timber shelving, mirrors and botanical-pattern flooring create a distinctive extension of the café's colour palette.

The use of greenery-inspired colours and patterns connects the washroom design with the botanical elements found throughout the main café.

The Challenge: From Zero to Completed Café in 30 Days

One of the defining challenges of the ButterBeans Cafe project was the programme.

Lambert Design & Build was given only 30 days to complete the project from an empty space, while the scope covered interior design together with multiple fit-out trades.

Within this timeframe, the project involved flooring, ceiling, electrical wiring, lighting, toilet refurbishment, artistic feature treatments, counter cabinetry and custom carpentry.

This required the different works to be carefully coordinated so that progress across one trade would not unnecessarily delay another.

The Result

Within the 30-day project period, the previously empty unit was transformed into a complete Modern Cozy café environment with its own recognisable visual identity.

Warm timber, dark contemporary tones, greenery, layered lighting and comfortable seating work together to create a space designed around both customer experience and practical café operation.
