Project Overview

This QuayWest Residence project in Penang focused primarily on custom carpentry and built-in cabinetry throughout the residence.

Rather than concentrating on a single room, Lambert Design & Build developed customised furniture for multiple areas of the home—from the dry and wet kitchens to the living room, bedrooms, shower rooms and private lift entrance.

The scope included dry and wet kitchen cabinetry, TV cabinet, built-in wardrobes for all bedrooms, vanity cabinets for all shower rooms, a custom bedhead panel, private lift-area wall panelling, living-room display cabinet and shoe cabinet.

A combination of E0 melamine panels, solid plywood with Topmix HPL laminates, X-Slim glass doors and mirror doors was used across the relevant built-in furniture, together with selected DTC and BLUM hardware systems.

The objective was to create a residence where customised storage and furniture serve their individual functions while maintaining a coordinated interior language throughout the home.

Dry & Wet Kitchen Cabinetry

The residence incorporates separate dry and wet kitchen cabinetry, allowing the two kitchen areas to support different everyday functions.

Custom-made cabinetry enables the available space to be planned around storage, accessibility and the intended use of each kitchen rather than relying on standard cabinet configurations.

The project incorporated E0 melamine panels and solid plywood with Topmix HPL laminates, depending on the requirements of the relevant cabinetry.

Functionality was further enhanced through selected cabinet hardware and accessories.

BLUM & DTC Cabinet Hardware

Selected cabinetry throughout the residence incorporates:

Soft-closing mechanisms provide smoother and more controlled everyday operation.

For suitable overhead cabinetry, BLUM AVENTOS provides a practical lift-up opening solution, while additional kitchen and wardrobe accessories help improve storage organisation and accessibility.

These internal details are an important part of the cabinetry experience because good built-in furniture needs to function well, not simply look attractive.

Built-In Wardrobes for All Bedrooms

Custom built-in wardrobes were provided for all bedrooms, allowing the storage configuration to respond to each room and its available space.

The wardrobe designs incorporated selected materials and functional accessories according to their intended application.

Mirror doors were also incorporated into suitable wardrobe elements, allowing the mirror function to become part of the built-in furniture rather than requiring an additional standalone feature.

By customising the wardrobes room by room, storage could be integrated more naturally into the overall bedroom environment.

X-Slim Glass Door Features

Selected cabinetry incorporates X-Slim glass doors, introducing a lighter and more transparent visual element among the solid cabinet finishes.

Glass-door cabinetry can be particularly effective for display applications, where selected items remain visible while still being contained within the built-in furniture.

The slim-profile appearance also creates a visual contrast against the surrounding HPL and melamine cabinetry, adding another layer of detailing to the overall carpentry design.

Living Room Display Cabinet

A custom display cabinet was incorporated into the living room to combine storage with display functionality.

Unlike conventional closed storage, a display cabinet becomes part of the visual character of the room.

Its proportions, door treatment and relationship with surrounding furniture therefore need to be considered as part of the overall living-space composition.

The use of customised cabinetry allows the display feature to respond specifically to the available space while coordinating with the other built-in elements within the residence.

Custom TV Cabinet

The living area also features a custom TV cabinet designed specifically for the space.

The television naturally becomes an important visual focal point, so the surrounding cabinetry needs to provide functionality without unnecessarily dominating the room.

Custom carpentry allows the TV feature and storage elements to be developed as one integrated composition rather than combining unrelated standalone furniture pieces.

Private Lift Area Wall Panelling

One of the distinctive features of this QuayWest project is the custom wall panelling at the private lift area.

Instead of treating it simply as a circulation area, customised wall panelling gives the entrance a more intentional architectural character.

The feature also introduces the residence's material and design language before entering the main interior.

Custom Bedhead Panel

A custom bedhead panel was incorporated into the bedroom interior.

Made-to-measure bedhead features allow the sleeping area to be visually defined while creating a stronger relationship between the bed, surrounding cabinetry and wall treatment.

Rather than relying solely on loose furniture, the bedhead becomes an integrated part of the bedroom architecture.

Vanity Cabinets for All Shower Rooms

Custom vanity cabinets were provided for all shower rooms, extending the project's cabinetry approach beyond the kitchen, living room and bedrooms.

Made-to-measure vanity cabinetry provides dedicated bathroom storage while allowing the furniture proportions to respond to the available space.

Providing custom vanities across the shower rooms also helps maintain greater design consistency throughout the residence.

Custom Shoe Cabinet

A custom shoe cabinet was included as part of the home's storage planning.

Entrance storage plays an important practical role in keeping frequently used footwear organised and reducing visible clutter around arrival areas.

By designing the shoe storage specifically for the residence, it becomes an integrated part of the carpentry package rather than an additional freestanding cabinet.

Material Selection & Coordination

The project uses a combination of E0 melamine panels and solid plywood finished with Topmix HPL laminates, depending on the built-in furniture and application.

Rather than applying one material indiscriminately to every cabinet, the specification allows different furniture elements to use materials appropriate to their design requirements.

X-Slim glass doors and mirror doors introduce additional material variation within selected cabinetry.

Together, the combination of solid panels, HPL finishes, glass and mirrors creates greater visual variety while maintaining a coordinated overall carpentry direction.

Project Challenge

The main challenge of a whole-home carpentry project is maintaining consistency without making every piece of furniture look identical.

QuayWest Type C required custom cabinetry across numerous areas:

The kitchens needed functional storage and accessories. Bedrooms required wardrobes. Shower rooms required vanity cabinets. The living room needed both TV and display cabinetry. The entrance/private-lift area required its own architectural treatment, while shoe storage and the custom bedhead addressed additional household functions.

Each element serves a different purpose.

The challenge was therefore to create cabinetry appropriate to each individual area while ensuring that the overall residence still felt connected.

Our Solution

Lambert Design & Build approached the project by establishing a coordinated material and carpentry language while allowing individual areas to respond to their own functions.

A combination of E0 melamine panels and solid plywood with Topmix HPL laminates formed the core cabinetry specification.

Selected X-Slim glass doors and mirror doors were then introduced where a different visual or functional treatment was suitable.

Within the cabinetry, DTC soft-closing hinges, BLUM soft-closing drawer systems, BLUM AVENTOS and selected functional accessories were incorporated according to the requirements of the relevant furniture.

The private-lift wall panelling, bedhead feature and other customised elements extended the carpentry language beyond conventional storage cabinetry.

The result is a residence where storage, display, furniture and architectural carpentry work together as one coordinated interior system.
